Master in Public Health (MPH)

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is a graduate degree, which prepares candidates to work on a wide range of public services such as forming policy, advocating, health education, institutional administration, treatment delivery and disease prevention. The MPH course is designed for multidisciplinary professionals to upgrade their competency, especially in achieving primary health care goals. After completion of this course, graduates are expected to take up the role of leaders, essentially as generalists with preventive, curative, rehabilitative and management abilities.

The MPH degree in Purbanchal University (PU) is designed to expose candidates to 5 core discipline areas. They are:

  • Biostatistics
  • Epidemiology
  • Environmental Health
  • Health Policy and Administration
  • Social and behavioral sciences

Mission of the Curriculum

The mission of the curriculum is to provide complete guide as a cornerstone that directs formal public health education processes to prepare competent new millennium public health professionals/academics and managers to help improve and enhance the equality of life of the people through moving from normal health status towards optimum level of health.

Goal

The main goal of MPH Program is to develop public health professional human resources equipped with academic excellence, leadership quality for development of public health technology, and dedication in advancing new idea in the field of public health. Such resources could contribute to the people become healthy by livening in healthy environment through promoting and protecting health, preventing from becoming sick or diseased or infirmed.

Objectives

Main objective of Master of Public Health Program is to produce competent human resources to provide quality public health services, both general as well as specialized, who will be working at the central and intermediate level health services; public, private and corporate organizations; taking service, education and research responsibilities.

Specific objectives of the MPH program

The specific objectives of Master of Public Health in General and Specialized Public Health are to develop such public health professionals who are competent and dedicated to:

1.    Advocate with firm arguments the advanced and changing concept of general public health and specialized fields of public health.

2.      Apply the knowledge and skills of public health epidemiology, statistics, and research in exercising general and specialized public health practices

3.      Apply advanced concepts of environmental and occupational health; demography, reproductive and family health in terms of their principles and application in public health.

4.      Conduct general and specialized public health intervention programs applying theories and principles of  behavioral sciences, particularly that of public health sociology, cultural anthropology and social psychology.

5.      Carry out health promotion and education programs in general and specialized fields of public health in support of promoting and protecting health of the people, preventing diseases and control of epidemics

6.      Manage general and specialized public health programs following modern and scientific public health management principles and procedures

7.      Conduct research in specialized public health issues including preparation of reports applicable to plan and implement public health programs and projects

8.      Study and strengthen the existing public health practices in the public and private sector organizations through continuing education and training programs

9.      Assist public health and related organizations in solving their public health service problems by providing consultancy services.

10.  Contribute to public health literature through research and publications.

11.  Lead the practice of public health in governmental, non-governmental, and private sectors by maintaining public health professional standards and its values

Course duration, structure and coding

The duration of MPH program will be of two years spread over four semesters. There will be no private student enrollment system. All students are required to attend the classes for the said durations.

The curriculum of MPH has been structured to cope with diversity of changing demands of public health endeavors. Besides the core courses, the curriculum provides opportunities for the students to purse individual interest through broad based choice of specialization subjects.

There will be 10 core courses (5 each in first and second semester) and 8 (5 in third and 3 in fourth semester) courses in each of the specialization area making a total of 18 courses to be studied to earn the degree of MPH. Currently, there will be provision for specialization in two areas and more areas can be added in the future. The two areas are:

·         Public Health Service Management

·         Health Promotion and Education

Admission Requirements in Master of Public Health

·   MBBS, BDS, BPH, BN/BNS/BSc. Nursing, B.Sc MLT/BMLT, BAMS, B.Pharmacy, B.Optometry, B.V.Sc. BASLP or equivalent from institutions recognized by the government of Nepal.

·   Registered either in Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, Nepal Health Professional Council, Nepal Pharmacy Council, Nepal Ayurveda Council or Nepal Veterinary Council.

·        

Candidate should score a minimum of 50% (Pass Marks) in the Entrance Examinations

  • Duration- 3 hours including one-time voluntary toilet break.
